Chat show king Graham Norton loves to surprise his fans but his latest revelation will really stun them – he is toying with the idea of retirement.
Norton, who is only 52, is the current supremo of the chat format, constantly getting the hottest guests and enjoying best banter on his hit BBC show.
So why think of quitting when he’s finally where he has always dreamed of being?
It is because the perfectionist, whose fussiness has caused break-ups and heartache in his personal life, can’t bear the thought of becoming second best.
He explains: “You want to get out when people are still watching your show.
“You don’t want it to be when people say: ‘That is still on, that is still a thing?’ see more after the cut...
This is the 18th year of me doing a chat show. We’ve been working up to this moment of being on BBC1 on that prime Friday night slot, so we’ve always been inching forward over those 18 years.
“The thing no one wants is the inching backwards, where you’re kind of going: ‘Yes the cast of Towie can come on…’ That’s about retiring when you’re on top.”
Talking with his Radio 2 show co-presenter Maria McErlane in front of an audience in London, ahead of the publication of his memoir The Life and Loves of a He Devil, the Irishman said he’ll be gone from our screens well before he turns 60 in eight years time.
“I’m not jumping tomorrow but it is in my head,” he said.
“You want to get out when you can still enjoy your life.
“Neighbours of mine worked and worked and went on this trip of a lifetime round the world.
what do you think?
