The National Conference was set up by the last administration to discuss and proffer solutions to the myriad of problems bedevilling the country. Its subsequent report to former President Goodluck Jonathan was received with words of commendation for a national job well done. He did address Nigerians then, that it was a “promise kept” and that he would implement the Confab report later.
Perhaps, the ex-president was procrastinating and banking on political calculations then, that when he went back to Aso Rock for the second term in office, he would then sway his way to implement the confab report. Unfortunately, the March 28, 2015 presidential election results were contrary to his expectations.
Since the assumption into office of President Muhammadu Buhari, mum has been the word in the Presidency over the fate of the confab report. There is no doubt that the report being a national matter was officially handed over by Jonathan to the current President Buhari for implementation. The decisions of the confab are weighty for the fact that it was a rare and well-utilised opportunity by Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to make inputs to remedy their common problems. Nigerians resolved through the National Conference to restructure our social, economic and political connectivity, as a sine qua non to national cohesion and growth!
Therefore, President Buhari should study the confab report with a view to implementing it.
